Preparing Your Home For Winter – It’s Not Too Late!

It’s cold outside! Is your home ready for the winter season? Here are some great tips on preparing your home, so you and your loved ones will stay toasty and warm – all winter long!

Check your doors and windows for “air leaks” – holding a tissue in front of a closed door or window is an easy way to check. As you move the tissue around the frame, if it starts to move there is a leak. Be sure to replace the caulk around leaky doors and windows to cut down on your heating costs, and prevent drafts.

Protect your pipes by wrapping insulation or newspaper and plastic around them – which will prevent them from freezing. During very cold nights, allow your faucets to gently drip, which will keep the water flowing – preventing it from freezing during the night.

Ensure carbon monoxide and fire detectors are working. Winter is one of the deadliest months of the year with carbon monoxide poisoning – especially with windows all closed. Be sure to also have fire extinguishers on hand in case of a fire – and ensure your entire family knows how to use it!
